For years, “Mustafa Ali” relied on farming as his family's primary source of income. Like many farmers in Khartoum State, limited access to reliable irrigation made it difficult to cultivate his land, affecting both agricultural production and his family's livelihood.
Through the Smallholder Farmers Support activity, implemented under the Strengthening Resilience and Recovery for Returnees and Host Communities in Sharq Al Neel Locality project by Sadagaat Charity Organization with support from UNDP Sudan, “Mustafa” gained access to sustainable irrigation that transformed his farming activities. As part of the activity, a solar-powered pumping station was installed in East Al-Bageir, Khartoum State. Powered by 160 solar panels, the station provides sustainable irrigation for 450 feddans of agricultural land.
The improved access to irrigation has enabled “Mustafa” and other farmers to cultivate their land more consistently while reducing their reliance on costly fuel-powered pumping systems. As agricultural production increased, farming once again became a more reliable source of income for their families.
Today, “Mustafa” continues to cultivate his land with greater confidence, supported by a sustainable irrigation system that has strengthened both his productivity and his resilience.
“Mustafa's” story reflects the impact the project strives to achieve. By investing in renewable energy solutions and supporting smallholder farmers, the project helps restore livelihoods, improve food production, strengthen local resilience, and create more sustainable opportunities for farming communities.
